The Soul Rebels

THE BAND

Derrick “Oops” Moss

Bass Drum, Co-founder

Derrick “Oops” Moss is the heartbeat of The Soul Rebels, an unstoppable drummer whose power, precision, and energy drive the band’s signature sound. Born and raised in New Orleans, Derrick’s musical roots run deep. His mother was a gospel organist, pianist, singer, and choir director long before he was born, and her music filled the house throughout his childhood. He often says his rhythm was formed before he ever entered the world, developed during the nine months she played piano and Hammond B3 while carrying him.

Derrick’s talent showed early. He was beating on pots and pans before he could walk and eventually mastered drums and nearly every hand percussion instrument he touched. His influences range from his mother and the Jackson 5 to Earth, Wind and Fire, Roger and Zapp, Guy, P Funk, and The Neville Brothers.
As a founding force behind The Soul Rebels, Derrick brings unmatched energy and explosive groove to every show. He loves the freedom of performing, being able to do what he was born to do while spreading joy and liberation to everyone in the room. His favorite song to perform is “We Gohn Take Your Body,” a track he wrote that lets him pull the crowd into the moment and party with them up close and personal.
One of his most unforgettable moments was debuting that very song at a sold out CD release party at Tipitina’s, with his mother watching proudly from the balcony front and center.
On stage, Derrick provides the boom, the deep infectious pulse that makes crowds move, and the relentless energy that pushes the band forward. Off stage, he is a man of many passions including motorcycles, bicycles, anything with wheels, track and field, tennis, ping pong, golf, football, swimming, diving, boating, target shooting, and archery.
He hopes fans feel excitement, joy, freedom, and release when they hear The Soul Rebels. And while many know him as a drummer, few know he is also a retired engineer who in over thirty years never missed a single Soul Rebels show by choice or illness and has added years more to that record.
Growing up in New Orleans shaped Derrick into the fearless, limit free musician he is today. If he could collaborate with anyone, it would be Prince, a musical and creative genius he deeply admires.
His favorite part of touring is performing around the world for people who have never seen the band and turning strangers into family by the end of the show.
As for the future, Derrick sees The Soul Rebels continuing to evolve with the times, just as they always have. His role is clear: stay sharp, stay modern, and keep delivering the energy, drive, and funk that power The Soul Rebels sound.
Derrick “Oops” Moss is more than the drummer. He is the engine, the spark, and one of the original forces that keep The Soul Rebels moving forward.
